Gold slips 3% as hawkish Fed comments spark market sell-off

Gold prices dropped 3% on Friday on a broader market sell-off, sparked by hawkish remarks from U.S. Federal Reserve officials, dimming hopes for a December interest rate cut. Spot gold fell 1.9% to $4,092.72 per ounce, as of 02:33 p.m. ET (1933 GMT), after falling over 3% earlier in the session. However, bullion is up 2.3% so far this week. U.S. gold futures for December delivery settled 2.4% lower at $4,094.20. "It's this idea that we're going to see a lesser likelihood of a Fed rate cut in December that is taking some of the wind out of the sails of the gold and silver market," said David Meger, director of metals trading at High Ridge Futures. Equity markets tumbled, following the global selloff triggered by hawkish Fed signals. The longest U.S. government shutdown, which ended Thursday

European shares fall as US rate cut expectations wane; UK fiscal worries resurface

European shares fell on Friday, as hawkish commentary from U.S. policymakers dampened expectations of an imminent interest rate cut, even as the benchmark STOXX 600 index registered its strongest weekly performance since late September. The pan-European STOXX 600 ended down 1% to 574.81 points, with banks down 2.4%. Macro developments in the U.S. have been in the spotlight this week and investors were hopeful that the resumption of data releases would point to a weaker economy and give the Federal Reserve reason to lower borrowing costs in December. However, those expectations were pared after a growing number of Fed policymakers signalled caution on further easing. Additionally, technology stocks came under renewed selling pressure. "If indeed (US markets are) in bubble territory and the

Is the fall in gold hinting at weakness? Here’s why slide may not mean what you think

Gold prices in India have eased from recent highs, but the decline is being viewed as a technical correction rather than a sign of weakening momentum. After climbing steadily over the past few months, MCX gold slipped toward the crucial Rs 1,21,800 support zone, prompting questions on whether the broader rally was losing steam. However, analysts emphasise that the pullback is occurring within an established uptrend, with key structural levels still intact for the Indian market. The recent movement in gold is being characterised as a retest of previously supportive zones, rather than a downturn driven by fundamental factors. Domestic and global charts continue to trade within a broader rising pattern, indicating that the larger trend remains upward.Analysts note that even though interim dips

Wall Street Week Ahead: Skittish tech stock investors turn to Nvidia results for next cues

Turbulence in technology stocks could ratchet higher in the coming week as investors react to the quarterly report from Nvidia Corp, the world's largest company by market value that is at the heart of Wall Street's artificial intelligence trade. Showing a steadier tone by late Friday, the benchmark S&P 500 equity index ended a volatile few days about flat on the week. Strength in the first three days yielded to a selloff on Thursday as uncertainty about the economic outlook and path for U.S. interest rates undercut optimism over the end of the longest-ever U.S. government shutdown. The Cboe's VIX stock volatility index, the market's so-called fear gauge, reached its highest in about a month early Friday as stock index futures slid in early trade. Investors remained skittish about vulne
