A deep divide has emerged within India’s car industry over a proposed light-weight mini-car category, just months before the government finalises the CAFE 3 fuel efficiency and emissions framework, The Times of India reported on December 10.The dispute has reached the office of road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari, with a broad coalition of manufacturers raising concerns about the proposal and its potential impact on safety standards, investments and future product development.At the centre of the dispute is a push reportedly led by Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Kirloskar, with support from Renault, to introduce a new segment for cars weighing up to 909kg.Nearly all vehicles that would fall under this category currently come from the Maruti portfolio.
