Australia will raise its cap on international student enrolments by 9% in 2026, increasing the intake to 295,000, the federal government announced on Monday. The revised figure marks a rise from the current 270,000 limit set for 2025. The decision comes as part of the government’s recalibrated migration strategy, aimed at managing education sector growth while addressing housing and infrastructure pressures. Education Minister Jason Clare said the policy is intended to balance sectoral growth with national interests. “This is about making sure international education grows in a way that supports students, universities and the national interest,” he said in a statement. Southeast Asia to be prioritised The updated policy will give preference to applicants from Southeast Asian nations.
