Railways told to rethink growth plan

A government panel has urged the Indian Railways to open more of its operations to private participation, warning that old assumptions on traffic growth, especially coal freight, may no longer hold in a changing energy landscape, The Times of India reported on January 21.The Public Investment Board (PIB), the inter-ministerial body that vets all major public-funded projects, has asked the Railways to actively involve private companies across multiple segments.
