US conducts successful test launch of Minuteman III ballistic missile

The U.S. Air Force successfully launched an unarmed Minuteman III ICBM from California, demonstrating the readiness and effectiveness of the nation's nuclear deterrent. Traveling at 15,000 miles per hour, the missile reached the Marshall Islands, 4,200 miles away.
