Tata Sons to inject $11 billion in Maha

The Tata Group will invest $11 billion in developing a state-of-the-art “Innovation City” near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra's Chief Minister, told news agency ANI on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum at Davos 2026.Speaking on the sidelines, Chief Minister Fadnavis said international investors are showing strong interest in the project. “Tata Sons has committed $11 billion to build this Innovation City, including a data center,” he told ANI. “Our goal is to make Mumbai a hub where anyone in the world can easily access a plug-and-play innovation system," he said and added that this is India’s first such initiative, and the project is expected to begin within six to eight months.Maharashtra, which contributes over 10% of India’s GDP, is home to Mumbai, the nation’s financial capital, major corporations like Reliance Industries and Tata Group, and the country’s primary stock exchanges. The state has unveiled a $30 billion plan to upgrade Mumbai’s infrastructure amid pressures from rising unemployment. The strategic location of the Innovation City next to the Adani Group–developed Navi Mumbai Airport is expected to foster synergies between global connectivity and high-tech industry. The project comes as major global technology firms—including Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon—pour billions into data centers to deliver AI services worldwide. McKinsey & Co. estimates that global demand for data center capacity could more than triple by 2030, reaching 219 gigawatts annually.Fadnavis said the concept for Innovation City was first introduced at the 2025 WEF under the “AI and Innovation Ecosystem” theme. “We presented the idea to over 400 investors, and now we’ve finalized the location. Tata Sons’ commitment has generated significant international interest,” he added. The project will include infrastructure development and a data center, forming the backbone of India’s growing AI and semiconductor ambitions. Union Minister for Electronics Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted India’s comprehensive AI strategy, emphasizing a public-private partnership model rather than reliance solely on large tech firms. In addition to AI and semiconductors, Maharashtra is exploring energy innovations, including partnerships with Indian and Russian firms to develop small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). This initiative has been enabled by the passage of the SHANTI bill in Parliament, supporting smaller-scale nuclear energy projects. The Innovation City near Navi Mumbai Airport is seen as a major step toward creating a global innovation hub in India, attracting investment, fostering high-tech development, and strengthening the country’s position in the emerging Fifth Industrial Revolution.
