SpiceJet expands capacity amid IndiGo woes

As Indian aviation reels from recent (and ongoing) turbulence at IndiGo, SpiceJet has seized the moment with a major winter schedule expansion aimed at capturing pent-up demand, a statement by the airline said on December 10. According to the statement, SpiceJet said it would introduce up to 100 additional daily flights during the current winter schedule -- subject to regulatory approvals -- riding a burst of "strong and growing demand across key routes". Over the past two months, the low-cost carrier has inducted 17 aircraft into active operations, and more are on the way, the airline said. This came via a combination of damp-leased planes and the return to service of its own grounded aircraft. These addtions will give the airline "operational flexibility to deploy incremental capacity on high-demand routes and improve overall network resilience," the statemnt added. The airline said it focus was on "maximising aircraft utilisation, strengthening connectivity and better aligning capacity with demand."This late-year ramp up -- combining fleet expansion and higher flight frequency -- underscored SpiceJet’s ambition to turn current aviation chaos into a strategic opportunity. The stock market has responded to SpiceJet’s expansion plan with significant news -- the shares of the company have rallied sharply over the past few days.Shares of SpiceJet rose as much as 5% to hit an intraday high of Rs 36 on December 10, having climbed for a fourth straight session. This takes the stock's rally to an astouding 19% during the past few days.
