New Delhi: Declining air quality in many parts of the country, particularly in the month of November, in the last three years has been driving the growth of medicines for respiratory illnesses. The respiratory market saw an 8% growth year-on-year last month, compared to 5% in November 2024 and 7% in November 2023, data from market research firm PharmaTrac showed. "An increased consumption across core respiratory therapy categories was seen in the month of November, signalling a strong environment-linked disease burden," said Sheetal Sapale, vice president (commercial) at PharmaTrac. Multiple regions recorded double-digit month-on-month growth in November, indicating that air pollution in winter months escalates respiratory ailments. Sapale said growth in the anti-asthma and anti-COPD segment in November was the highest in three years last month. Systemic antihistamines, which are typically used for allergic reactions or symptoms of allergic reactions, have also shown a relatively higher growth of 9% despite the fact that growth last year was very high 16%, she said. The respiratory segment shows a seasonal trend, which picks up from June and peaks towards December. After that, it comes down till June. The cough and cold category within the respiratory segment plateaus in the winter season. In the majority of the states, growth of anti-asthma and COPD saw a double-digit growth, led by Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand with a 22% growth in sales, followed by Punjab and Chandigarh at 17% . Delhi and Haryana saw a 9% growth, data showed. "Also, in the majority of the places, the growth of the antihistamines is in double digits," Sapale said. In the North zone, many children had to be hospitalised due to breathing problems, she said. "Emerging hot spots show alarming growth trends. Multiple regions are recording double-digit month-on-month growth in November and this is something which, collectively as a nation, is a concern for us."
