Naravane issues first response on memoir row

Amid continued Parliament uproar over his book, Former Indian Army Chief Manoj Mukund Naravane on Tuesday said that the status of his upcoming memoir remains unchanged, as claims that an advance copy of the book circulate.“This is the status of the book,” Naravane said in a brief post on X, responding to the controversy surrounding his memoir Four Stars of Destiny.— ManojNaravane (@ManojNaravane) His remark came a day after Penguin Random House India issued a detailed clarification stating that it alone holds the publishing rights to the book and that the memoir has not yet been released in any form. Also Read | Penguin India says ‘Four Stars of Destiny’ unpublished, threatens legal action over circulating copiesThe British-American publisher said earlier that no copies, printed or digital, have been published, shared, sold or made available to the public. It added that any version of the book currently circulating is unauthorised and illegal.“In light of recent public discourse and media reporting, we wish to clarify that the book has not gone into publication,” the publisher said, warning that any circulation of the manuscript would amount to copyright infringement and could lead to legal action.Penguin Random House India said its statement was issued to clearly place the publisher’s position on record. The storm behind Naravane's bookThe clarification was issued after a raging political row caught Parliament by storm during its Budget Session, and led to a police probe over claims that a pre-print version of the memoir is being shared publicly. The issue reached House last week after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi referred to what he described as a “pre-print book” during his speech on the motion of thanks to the President’s Address in the Lok Sabha. Also Read | 'Four Stars of Destiny' row: Rahul Gandhi rebukes Penguin India; says 'either Army Chief is lying or the publisher'The reference drew strong objections from treasury benches, leading to repeated disruptions. The House later adopted the motion by voice vote amid sloganeering by opposition members. The LoP in Lok Sabha has, however, questioned Penguin India's stand and alleged contradictions between Naravane’s remarks and Penguin’s statement. Gandhi, defending his position, has said, "MM Naravane has posted on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) saying, ‘Hello friends, my book is available now. Follow the link. Happy reading’. Either MM Narainne is lying, or Penguin is lying. I chose to believe the Army Chief. One of them is lying. Will you believe Penguin over MM Naravane?”Meanwhile, Delhi Police has registered an FIR after claims surfaced online suggesting that a pre-print or digital version of Four Stars of Destiny was being circulated without mandatory clearances. Officials said the Special Cell has taken cognisance of the matter and initiated an investigation into the alleged leak of the unpublished manuscript.
