India is witnessing an unexpected surge in demand for private jets as flight cancellations and delays continue to disrupt travel plans across the country. The chaos triggered by IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has forced many travellers, especially corporate groups and destination wedding parties, to turn to charter aircraft as their last and only rescue option.Private jets rushed to rescue stranded travellersIn one dramatic instance, an Embraer E175LR private jet had to be deployed to Guwahati on Saturday to pick up 36 children of top corporate executives who were stuck in Kaziranga after IndiGo cancelled its flights.According to TOI, this incident reflects the broader trend of families and businesses scrambling for charter planes to escape the ongoing aviation crisis during the peak travel and wedding season.Demand for charter aircraft has hit an “unprecedented” highPopular wedding locations such as Udaipur, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Hyderabad and Chennai have seen a massive spike in private jet bookings.Gautam Sahni of Subha Aviation, which specialises in aircraft charters, said movements across these cities have suddenly shot up to levels never seen before. He explained that the entire surge is fuelled by destination wedding groups and medium-sized corporate batches of 50–180 passengers whose scheduled flights were cancelled unexpectedly.Sahni added that nearly all 50-seater charter jets are unavailable in the Indian market right now because “charter operators have had to pull aircraft out of scheduled fleet operations to meet demand”.In one case, an eight-seater private jet flew empty from Delhi to Kolkata just to pick up a wedding group when their airline connection broke down.December peak season adds to the pressureAs per a TOI report, Mandar Bharde of MAB Aviation confirmed that the past four days have brought a flood of enquiries, mainly from destination wedding organisers and holiday travellers.He revealed that while Mumbai has around 8–10 charter aircraft and Delhi has close to 20, most were already booked even before the IndiGo disruptions intensified, leaving almost no availability in December.Similarly, Rahul Muchhal of Accretion Aviation reported receiving 200–250 charter enquiries every day for sectors such as Delhi–Goa, Delhi–Udaipur and Mumbai–Delhi.
