The Indian Railways is carrying out a major overhaul of its Passenger Reservation System (PRS), which currently has the capacity to book 25,000 tickets per minute, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told Lok Sabha on Wednesday.In a written response to a question on PRS upgrades, Vaishnaw said, "Capacity enhancement and technological upgradation is an ongoing process of Indian Railways. Presently, the booking capacity of the current PRS is about 25,000 tickets per minute."The comprehensive upgrade includes the replacement and enhancement of hardware, software, network equipment, security infrastructure, and functionalities, all built on new technology capable of supporting additional features."The new system is designed for more than four times the present capacity," Vaishnaw added, noting that the project has been approved at a cost of Rs 182 crore.Vaishnaw also highlighted improvements in mobile ticketing. The Railways recently launched the RailOne App, which allows passengers to book both reserved and unreserved tickets directly from their smartphones."This, in effect, brings the PRS facility to the passengers' palms," he said.With inputs from PTI
