New Delhi:

Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, speaking in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the Union Budget (Second Stage), highlighted the transformational redevelopment of Prayagraj Railway Station as part of the government’s broader railway modernisation mission.

Addressing the House, the Minister noted that Prayagraj — one of India’s most historically significant spiritual, cultural and political cities — had for decades seen limited modernisation of its railway infrastructure despite its national importance and association with several Prime Ministers.

Shri Vaishnaw stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, a comprehensive “Nav-Nirman” redevelopment of Prayagraj Railway Station has now been initiated to provide world-class facilities to millions of passengers and pilgrims visiting the city.

The redevelopment is part of a nationwide railway station transformation programme aimed at converting major railway stations into integrated “City Centres”.

Key features of the redevelopment include:

  • Modern passenger amenities and upgraded concourses
  • Segregated arrival and departure systems
  • Spacious roof-plaza infrastructure
  • Seamless multimodal connectivity
  • Architecture aligned with the heritage identity of Prayagraj

The Minister emphasised that the project assumes special importance in view of the massive influx of pilgrims expected during major spiritual gatherings, including the upcoming Mahakumbh.

During the debate, he also questioned why, despite Prayagraj’s prominence and political representation over decades, earlier administrations had not undertaken a comprehensive redevelopment of the station.

He reiterated that the present government’s approach goes beyond incremental improvement and represents a structural transformation of India’s railway infrastructure and passenger experience.

The redevelopment of Prayagraj Station reflects the broader national vision of building modern, efficient and culturally rooted public infrastructure capable of serving millions of citizens with dignity and convenience.
